Drug trade: Effects of Captagon transit on Germany
Germany is becoming more and more a transit country for trading in the drug Captagon, which is also known as the "jihadist drug". A trial against four Syrians for gang -based trade with Captagon will begin in Aachen at the end of July. Between October 2021 and October 2023, men are said to have smuggled almost half a ton of capagon tablets that had a street sales value of around 60 million euros.
The main sales markets for capagon are the Arabian Peninsula and Saudi Arabia. In Germany, the tablets are often illegally introduced and hidden into camouflage goods, which are then transported to other countries. Germany has increasingly targeted Germany from international drug smugglers who use the German Transitweg to avoid controls in the target countries.
A worrying case that started in 2022 was uncovered in Aachen. More than ten kilograms of Captagon was found during the control of packages with brake cylinders at Cologne/Bonn Airport. The investigation led the officials to further hiding places, including fragrance candles, air purifiers and a fireplace.
Captagon, mainly made up of amphetamine, is considered extremely dangerous because it suppresses tiredness, has a stimulating effect and is highly addictive. The illegal production facilities are mainly in Syria and Lebanon. According to investigators, it is believed that the Syrian regime is involved in this billion -dollar business. The drugs often reach Europe via country or sea routes, where they are re-packed and sent on.
This process and the increasing use of Germany as a transit land for drug smuggling underline the need for effective international cooperation to combat illegal trade in dangerous substances such as capagon.
