The long way of reconstruction: flood disaster in Stolberg and Eschweiler
a fresh start after the flood disaster
On July 14, 2021, the cities of Stolberg and Eschweiler experienced a devastating natural disaster when the Vichtbach and Inde entered over the banks and caused massive floods. Three years later, the reconstruction is in full swing, and the cities work tirelessly to rebuild their communities.
Stolberg: Hope and reconstruction
Stolberg was one of the most affected areas. Many parts of the city were covered by mud and rubble. Today, however, Stolberg looks forward and sees the reconstruction as an opportunity. New projects and renovations are underway, including the return of council meetings to the historical town hall and the revival of the city library.
The victims of the flood included 10,000 books from the children's and youth area of the city library, which are now to be brought back to life through a feasibility study. A symbolic step to underline the importance of the city's cultural heritage.
Eschweiler: reconstruction with a sense of proportion
in Eschweiler the Grabenstraße was under water, numerous shops were damaged and infrastructural facilities were destroyed. But the city is working hard to recover and repair the damage.
One of the biggest challenges is the construction of the Willi Fährmann School, the buildings of which were no longer viable due to the flood damage. The demolition is planned for the summer of 2025, followed by a new building with a planned completion until 2028.
The residents of Eschweiler fight back step by step back into their normal life. The commitment and the solidarity of the community show that they are strong together and are stronger from the catastrophe.
