Historical treasure: Aachen-Frankfurter Heerstrasse shines new

Würselen, Deutschland - The Aachen-Frankfurter Heerstrasse, which is considered the "most important street in Germany" and looks back on almost 1000 years of history, is now back in the spotlight. Bernhard Steinauer, emeritus road construction professor of RWTH and member of the Karolinger working group, is committed to reviving the historical path. His goal is to make the route recognizable and make it attractive to hikers, cyclists and riders. "We will no longer experience this, but can deliver suggestions," says Steinauer, who emphasizes the importance of Heerstrasse for the cities and villages along the way.

Recently, an info stele was built on the old Kaninsberg, which reveals the view of Aachen. According to Steinauer, the knowledge of around 252 kilometers long via Regia, which once required a three -day trip, hardly sufficient to grasp everything on the stele. In addition, two other steles are being planned. "We hope that they are perceived as a treasure by the population," said Steinauer. The project, funded by the NRW Home Ministry and supported by local historians, wants to put the cultural heritage back into the consciousness of the people, while almost 50 stelae already set up along the historical path.
