Free parenting ticket: Safe to school from August!

Effects of the free school samples on families and children

With the start of the new school year, many parents have the opportunity to make their way to school safer to their children. In certain regions of North Rhine-Westphalia, in particular in Aachen, this is supported by special offers from the Westphalia tariff transport association and the Aachen Verkehrsverbund (AVV).

Advantages of the parenting tickets for a safe approach

The parenting ticket enables children to try out their way to school together with a parent before the first day of school under realistic conditions. This ticket is valid from August 5th to 30th and offers a simple return trip from home to school. The focus of this initiative is in particular on first graders and fourth graders who prepare for a change of school.

The safe way to start school

For families in Aachen there is also the so-called "discoverer freely ticket", which is valid for 24 hours. It offers parents the opportunity to get to know various routes and means of transport together with their fourth graders and thus practice safe behavior on the way to school. A voucher that is distributed together with a letter to the parents informs about the use of the ticket. There are also helpful brochures that give tips on the right behavior in road traffic.

No uniforms from other transport associations

During Westphalia tariff and AVV with the free tickets for security and familiarity on the way to school, the transport associations Rhein-Sieg (VRS) and Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) currently do not offer such offers. The VRR representatives point out that children under the age of six are allowed to drive free of charge, but it is unclear whether trial tickets are issued in this context. A uniform practice is missing here that creates transparent regulations for all families.

The importance of the initiative for the community

The introduction of such tickets not only affects the individual families, but can ultimately also contribute to the safety of all road users. If children have practiced school by bus or train before their first school day, they will be more confident and safer. In the future, this can lead to fewer accidents on the road and the parents are less concerned about the safety of their children during their way to school
