New monument in Hameln: memory of an indivisible Germany!
Berliner Platz, 31785 Hameln, Deutschland - In Hameln, a faithful replica of a controversial memorial stone, which the inscription "B1 Aachen Berlin Königsberg 1170 km - Germany is indivisible", was set up on Berliner Platz. The former stone was removed and broken in spring 2023. The new production has been financed by several donors and has been completed since August 27, but there is still no explanatory information board that puts the monument in a historical context, which was confirmed by city spokesman Thomas Wahmes.
The historian Bernhard Gelderblom has already written the text for the board. Pupils of the Eugen Reintjes School are working on the design, which delays the installation of the board. As soon as everything is finished, there should be an official inauguration with the mayor and Gelderblom. The monument refers to German division and evokes the not undisputed memory of the loss of the eastern areas, especially Königsberg. The monument donor emphasized that the mention of "Königsberg" is historically meant and not political. This discussion has been underpinned by the changed political framework since the two-plus four-contract of 1990, which determined the boundaries in Germany.
