Risky location in the Golan heights: voices from the Middle East
The current situation in Lebanon and the regional tensions are of great importance for many people, especially after the fatal incident, which took place on July 27, 2024 in Madschdal Schams. Here a rocket of the Hisbollah met a soccer field, which led to the death of twelve children and adolescents. This tragedy not only affects the families concerned, but also on the entire social structure in the region.
A look at emergency aid in Lebanon
The aid organization Missio Aachen has been active in Lebanon for many years and plays a crucial role in the support of the population. The project work is based on two main pillars: on the one hand on a long-term cooperation with proven partners, such as the German Association of the Holy Land and Cnewa in Lebanon, and on the other hand on acute and emergency aid programs. These programs offer support for Christian families who are forced to leave the south of Lebanon and flee to Beirut.
The challenges of de -escalation
In view of the escalating conflicts, the question of a mediator is of great importance. Simon Kuhl, Missio Aachen foreign officer, expresses the opinion that only pressure from outside, especially from the USA, can help. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems to be resistant to the American government's advice, which also complicates the situation. The uncertainty about the military strategies
The possibility of a massive ground attack, which is considered to be lost for many, is up for debate. It is believed that the Israeli armed forces could possibly take strategic heights in order to avoid the Hisbollah, which is able to bypass the Israeli rocket defense system Iron Dome. These measures could restore military balance and reduce the threat from the Hezbollah.
The role of the Drusen
The incident in Madschdal Schams also threw a light on the Drusen, an ethnic-religious group that lives in the Golan heights. Their cultural identity and relationships with the various actors in the region are an important factor. While the people in Northern Israel were evacuated and protected, the Drusen in Lebanon are increasingly at risk. The government in Lebanon has so far not initiated any extensive evacuation measures, which makes people in the region even more vulnerable.
The future of project work in Lebanon
In view of the uncertain situation, Missio will not only have to contribute to the bridging of emergency aids, but will also offer long -term perspectives and solutions for people in Lebanon. With a continuous presence and a clear focus on support and stability, Missio Aachen would like to help to manage the humanitarian crisis and create a basis for peace and security.Overall, this situation shows how interwoven the conflicts in the Middle East are and how important international support is to stabilize the affected communities and help people in need.
