Where are the bollards? A look at the mysterious plugs in the city
new cycle paths in Aachen: a blessing or a curse for the drivers?
The city administration in Aachen has played a lot of trust in the past few weeks. Not only have all bollards on Annuntiatenbach have disappeared, but the failures in building new cycle paths also provide discussions. Motorists traffic jam while wide cycle paths create space for cyclists. A new, over four meters wide bike path on Liège Straße makes road users sweat. Should commuters from Belgium really switch to the bike to avoid traffic chaos?
The city's measures are intended to help commuters switch to the bike and thus reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the city. However, construction sites, diversions and the blocking of Von-Coels-Straße lead to more car trips and thus a higher CO2 emissions. The planned bike paths along Monheimallee and Heinrichsallee are supposed to create more space for cyclists, while the strict guidelines of the Radscheid lead to controversial discussions. Do the new cycle paths really make sense if bicycle brackets and bike boxes that have already been built remain unused?
But not only road topics cause trouble in Aachen. The city has surprisingly withdrawn from the state model project "Quantity entry into daycare care" because the financing was not secured. This means that 20 people who should start care for children in August are now facing an uncertain future. The negligence of administration and politics in this area leads to shortened care times and restricted offers for families.
