Smaller apartments in Hamm: What does that mean for the residents?
The current census shows that the apartments in Hamm are almost 89 square meters on average, almost four square meters less than the NRW average. This trend is also reflected in other metropolitan areas, where the apartments tend to be smaller than in the country. The living space in cities such as Gelsenkirchen, Düsseldorf, Duisburg and Cologne are particularly low. Even in regional centers such as Aachen, Münster and Bielefeld, the apartments are smaller than in the surrounding areas. In contrast, the apartments in the Münsterland, East Westphalia-Lippe and in the Eifel are greatest on average.
The census also shows that fewer apartments are empty in Hamm than in the NRW average, with a vacancy rate of 2.8 percent. Almost half of these empty apartments come back on the market within three months (1.3 percent). This corresponds approximately to the NRW-wide value. In the Ruhr area, the overall vacancy rate was higher, with Gelsenkirchen reaching the highest value at almost three percent.
It is striking that the average of the smallest living space in the large cities of the Ruhr area and the Rhine rail can be found, especially in Gelsenkirchen (76.6 m²), Düsseldorf, Duisburg and Cologne (77.6 m²). In regional centers such as Aachen (77.5 m²), Münster (85.7 m²) or Bielefeld (85.8 m²), the living space is lower compared to the neighboring municipalities. On the other hand, rural regions such as East Westphalia-Lippe, the Münsterland and the Eifel offer larger living areas on average.
The results of the census can provide important information to understand the living situation in different regions. Especially in metropolitan areas like Hamm, it is crucial to understand how the size of the apartments and the vacancy rate can influence the living environment of the residents. There may be a need for measures to create more living space or to use empty apartments to improve the living situation for citizens.
