The risk of stroke increases: hot nights also endanger young people

The fact that young people can also suffer a stroke is often overlooked. Vanessa Andersen, a 21-year-old medical assistant from Sielenbach, has experienced this firsthand. Their case shows how important it is to be aware of the symptoms that can indicate a stroke, and the more the risk factors that play a role.

The risk factors for strokes

Classic risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, smoking and lack of exercise. However, Bavarian scientists recently discovered another risk factor: nightly heat. Neurology at the University Hospital of Augsburg has analyzed data from 11,000 stroke patients and found that extreme night temperatures can increase the risk of stroke by seven percent.

Climate change and its consequences

The increase in strokes is due, among other things, to climate change. "The problem is that people dry out through the heat, which makes the blood more thick and increases the risk of blood clots," explains Professor Dr. Markus Naumann from the University Hospital Augsburg. Older people in particular often drink too little to avoid nightly toilet courses. A change in the habits could be crucial here.

Vanessa's personal struggle

After the experience of a stroke, Vanessa Andersen has had five weeks of rehab. Her experience serves as a warning signal for other young people: "There were simply no signs beforehand. I never thought that something like this could happen to me," she says. Their progress in rehabilitation is encouraging because their language disorders are almost resolved. Nevertheless, she still has to struggle with a tremor in the right leg and a weak arm.

Future developments and app development

The results of the research should also be used to develop an app in the future that warns risk patients of dangerous temperatures. Such technologies could help people take measures in good time and reduce the risk of stroke. At the same time, the clinics can be better prepared for an increase in patients.

Stroke: an alarming statistics

Every year, around 270,000 people suffer a stroke in Germany. Older people are particularly affected, but development in young people should not be ignored. Professor Naumann points out that the causes remain unknown in 30 percent of the patients. Therefore, it is all the more important to raise awareness of the symptoms and risk factors.
