Berliner Tafel: Lifeguard in the fight against poverty and food waste!
The Berliner Tafel last year has again provided tens of thousands of people with food every month. According to a preliminary balance sheet, the non -profit association has made a significant contribution to combating poverty by distributing stable 660 tons of food per month, which corresponds to about 22 tons a day. Around 400 social institutions, including homeless facilities and refugee accommodation, benefit from this great initiative. Since its foundation in 1993, the Berliner Tafel has developed into an important point of contact that collects unsold and fresh food and distributed it to the needy with the help of around 2,000 volunteers.
increasing demand and challenges in Brandenburg
But the Situation is not relaxed everywhere. In Brandenburg, the chairman of the State Association of Tafeln, Eric Gallasch, reports of an enormously increased demand that the existing food plates can no longer cover. Especially in rural areas, procurement has become difficult to donate food. Gallasch expresses fear that the offer could further reduce itself in the coming year. The reason for this are, among other things, the decline in donations from discounters and the increasing competition by other organizations that also want to save food.
The Berliner Tafel not only has an eye on direct food distribution. Programs such as Kimba , which aims at the needs of children and adolescents, also promotes future handling of food. In the cooking courses, the participants learn to prepare healthy dishes and to deal with food more consciously. These versatile initiatives show that the Berliner Tafel not only helps poor, but also integrates an educational component into their program to clarify the next generation.
