A look back: Photography exhibition on the GDR opens new perspectives!

A great return to the visual history of the GDR is imminent! The photo exhibition “Happiness on the edges” can be admired in the “Station of Urban Cultures” in Berlin-Hellersdorf until February 15, 2025. This exhibition brings a fascinating selection of over 360 pictures created by 37 different photographers. Here the socialist life of the GDR is viewed in a new light, especially from the point of view of the influence of these photographs on today's understanding of the past. The photographs, which are brought to the wall from the late GDR until the upheaval time of the early 1990s, show a transition from documentary practices to artistic and staged visual worlds.

The facets of photography

The exhibition illuminates the complexity of life in the GDR and asks which perspectives we choose today to form a picture of this complex society. This exploration is supported by a number of renowned photographers such as Peter Badel, Gerd Danigel, Christine Furuya-Gössler and many more who hold the tensions between what was ', and what is'. The exhibition originally travels from the ACC Galerie Weimar to Berlin and not only represents a review, but also expands our understanding of the visual documentation of the GDR era. Whether contemporary photography or cinematic border courses, each picture tells its own story and lets the viewer dive deep into the time.

Admission is free, and opening times are on Thursdays and Saturdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The cooperation between the new Society for Fine Art and the ACC Galerie Weimar shows that the view of the past has never been completed. The exhibition is an indispensable event for everyone who is interested in the transformation in German society and would like to learn more about the emotional and artistic examination of the GDR, such as berlin.de reported. The various genres and the connection between film and photography also give the exhibition a unique value, especially as part of the Berlin art week and the research of dictatorship experience and transformation.
