Massive restrictions in Berlin Central Station: Construction work from February 2025!
From February 2025, Berlin Central Station, Europe's largest crude station, will be a construction site for over two months. As the reporting of RBB | 24 and the Berliner Kurier can be expected for the approximately 330,300 daily travelers, since the underground part of the train station is blocked on half side. The reason for the work is the installation of six new switches and the exchange of several tracks that are necessary for the overloaded north-south connection; Only four of the eight tracks will be usable during the construction period.
planned closures and their effects
The block begins on February 17, 2025 and is carried out in several phases. From this date, the Südkreuz route tracks are closed for 35 days, followed by a further blocking of the north-distance tracks from March 24 for 26 days. It becomes particularly critical on the long weekends when the entire north-south tunnel is blocked from March 21 to 24 and again from April 18 to 22, 2025. The railway spokesman emphasizes that the construction work has been planned in the long term to improve the traffic processes, but temporarily the situation will be noticeably deteriorated for travelers.
The situation at the main train station is complicated by other construction sites in 2025: The route to Hamburg will be completely renovated from August 2025 to April 2026, which could lead to additional diversions and extended travel times of at least 45 minutes. At the same time, an interim station for the S-Bahn is to be opened in the first quarter of 2025, which could be a relieving measure. These extensive work are necessary adjustments that have been postponed for a long time since the opening of the main station due to the "summer fairy tale" planning at the time.
