Rest after the earthquake: Experts examine shocked regions!

In Brandenburg, an earthquake shaken the area around Herzberg (Elbe-Elster) on October 18, 2024. At 12:50 p.m., the Thuringian State Office for the Environment, Mining and Nature Conservation registered a thickness of 3.2 on the Richter scale, which was noticeable for the region. Despite the concern that aftershore could follow, it remained surprisingly quiet after the original quake, as Jens Skapski from the Friedrich Schiller University explained Jena. In order to better monitor the phenomenon, the university had set up four mobile seismometer stations in the municipalities Schlieben, Fichtwald and Heideblick. The sensors are to collect further data by the end of the year, but have so far not registered any further shocks.

more details about earthquake

earthquake are classified by the Magnitude ; Diving below 3.0 are barely noticeable and occasionally appear over a thousand times every day. In contrast, stronger quakes, such as in Herzberg, are rare, but potentially fairly dangerous. Predictions about the time of an earthquake are extremely difficult, and even modern warning systems often only give a minute to get to safety. Quake with a magnitude of 7.0 or higher are only about 20 times a year and can cause catastrophic damage.

The data collected could provide valuable knowledge of how earthquakes arise and behave, which is of great importance for science. However, the calm, which has occurred so far, could also lead to the stations will soon be dismantled instead of being replaced by permanent facilities.
