Austerity measures of the Senate: Komische Oper my friend Bunbury says!
The Berlin cultural sector is under pressure: Today the Komische Oper has announced the cancellation of its staging of "My Freund Bunbury" in the mirror tent on the Red Rathaus. The reason? Drastic cuts in the budget of the city of Berlin, which are reflected with a savings volume of almost 4 million euros for 2025. This decision was described as inevitable by the artistic articles Susanne Moser and Philip Bröking in order to be able to deal with the new financial realities. The opera recently successfully dedicated itself to the public favorite "Gisela trade fair shell", but had to pull the ripcord due to the tense financial situation, such as other ensembles, including the concert hall, which has also already painted program items, such as bz-berlin.de reported.
The story of "My friend Bunbury" actually promises theater magic: Jack and Cecily, distracted by their secret lovers and ambitions, try to escape the hustle and bustle of society by experiencing their adventures with the fictional friend Bunbury. This musical from the Wild 20s, which celebrated its premiere in the Berlin metropolitan theater in 1964, was not only a hit in the east, but was also highly valued in West Germany. The melodies of Gerd Natschinski combine tango, waltz and the lively black bottom in a rapid performance that director Max Hopp wanted to bring to life in the tent. Komische Oper Berlin describes the adventurous act, which impresses with confusion of identity and inheritance-perfectly for an entertaining musical, which unfortunately cannot come about.
The Komische Oper deeply regrets the cancellation and will contact all the viewers who have already acquired tickets with regard to the refund. In the midst of financial uncertainties and the still unresolved construction work at the headquarters in Behrenstrasse, there is a feeling of disappointment and loss for the Berlin cultural scene.
