Storm in Saxony-Anhalt: Fire brigade missions to heavy rain
Storm and the consequences for the community
The latest severe weather events in Saxony-Anhalt once again demonstrated the extent of the natural forces. On Wednesday evening, August 14, 2024, violent gusts of wind and heavy rain provided numerous operations by the fire brigade, especially in the districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld and Wittenberg. These events not only have caused material damage, but also lead a light on the challenges that the communities have to face.
Operations and special incidents
The fire brigade was challenged to pump out numerous basements and to eliminate fallen trees. In Bitterfeld, a car was hit by a crashed tree, which led to an injury to a person. In Radis, a village in the Wittenberg district, the federal road 100 (B100) became impassable by flooding, while the B246 in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district was blocked due to blocking trees.
rainy quantities and weather conditions
As announced by the MDR weather studio, a rainy amount of 84 liters per square meter in Kemberg, which usually corresponds to a whole month. At the measuring station in Jeßnitz, 26 liters were registered on the square meter. These extreme rains naturally led to flooding and impairments in road traffic. On the Autobahn 2 there were several accidents through aquaplaning, in which luckily only sheet metal damage arose.
The further effects on the region
Although the police and the fire brigade did not report any serious damage and the consequences of the storms could be quickly remedied, the question of the resilience of the affected communities remains. These events illustrate the need for improved infrastructure and emergency planning, especially in view of climate change, which could make such extreme weather events more often in the future. So municipalities should think about how they can prepare better in order to be up to the challenges of nature.
Wednesday's events should all remind us of how vulnerable we are and what measures are necessary to protect the community and make future-proof.
