Railway traffic between Rastatt and Baden-Baden restored after construction work

Deutsche Bahn (DB) is back in full travel after completing her extensive construction work on the Rhine Valley Railway between Rastatt and Baden-Baden. From Friday, August 30, 2024, at 9 p.m., train traffic will roll again, and the DB speaks its thanks to all long-distance and regional traffic customers: inside that have been patient during the construction period.

The last three weeks have been an intensive construction company for the Karlsruhe-Basel rail project. Those responsible have extensively renovated around two kilometers of the route between Rastatt and Baden-Baden to connect the tracks of the Rastatt tunnel to the Rhine Valley Railway. This represents a significant progress in the development of the railway tunnel, which is an important part of the DB Group strategy "Strong rail", which aims at increasing relocation of passenger and freight transport to environmentally friendly railways.

complex construction work

Meike Schlitter, the sub -project manager for this large project, emphasizes the challenges of the construction work. "We have largely renewed the tracks since August 9th. A total of four new switches have been installed so that trains could switch between the new and the previous route. This required adaptations of the overhead line and the lead and security technology, which was a real challenge due to the technical integration. Our team was almost around the clock, and the timely completion was an excellent team performance," explains Schlitter. <

The required test drives were successfully carried out on Friday, which led to the re -release of the route for regular rail traffic. But the work is not yet completely over. By 2025, activities in the area between the new tunnel and the Rheintalbahn will continue to be carried out, whereby the commissioning of the tunnel for the end of 2026 is planned without further route closures.

innovative solutions for freight transport

The Rhine Valley Railway plays a crucial role in the European freight transport corridor between the important ports in the Netherlands and Genoa. Significant freight traffic was redirected during the construction work. For the first time, a new-like Franco-German concept was used for diesel train pendulum connections. Despite initial difficulties, over 400 freight trains were successfully led over the Wörth (Rhein)-Lauterbourg-Strasbourg-Kehl route and finally reached the Rhine Valley Railway again. Here, DB Infrago cooperated closely with its French partner SNCF Réseau and the companies SBB Cargo International and Captrain France.

The construction program for the DB continues, with ongoing work on parallel sections of the route via Durmersheim. Auxiliary bridges in the north of Rastatt and a road underpass in Durmersheim are planned. Additional work on signal boxes and the course in Rastatt and Baden-Baden are also continued. This constant work has had an impact on the timetable of regional traffic until September 9, 2024, 5 a.m. The DB recommends its announcement: inside, information about the electronic timetable media and refers to the current travel information on www.bahn.de and in the app db navigator.

The website www.karlsruhe-basel.de is recommended for further information on the project. The social media landscape offers additional insights: The construction progress among the Handles @Karlsruhebasel and @tunnelrastatt can be found on Facebook and Instagram. The entire project is co -financed by the European Union.
