War trauma in court: Syrian has to pay for war crimes in Stuttgart

A suspected member of the Hisbollah is currently standing before the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court because of serious crimes against humanity and in connection with the Syrian Civil War. The 32-year-old Syrian is accused of being involved in torture, war crimes and the violent breakdown of protests in his role as the leader of an armed militia. During the government campaign under Bashar al-Assad, these crimes were made against their own population, which was brutally outlawed from 2011.

The process began with an emotional speech: a victim collapsed in the courtroom when the terrible details of the event were read out. The accused was arrested in December 2023 and has been in custody since then. Among other things, the indictment accuses him of abusing Sunni civilians and looting and destroying their houses. The pursuit of the acts committed in Syria in Germany is possible by the world law principle, which also provides for international crimes without direct reference to Germany to ensure that no safe port for perpetrators exists, www.tagesschau.de .
