SAP: The software giant from Walldorf and its roots in Baden-Württemberg
Baden-Württemberg has developed an impressive place on the world stage of the software industry. With SAP, the state has the largest software company outside the United States within its limits. The company headquarters in Walldorf is not only a symbol of innovative strength that comes from Germany - it also stands for the remarkable history of the company, the roots of which are deeply anchored in the region.
When you think of software, names like Microsoft and IBM seem inextricably linked to this industry. With billions of sales and millions of employees, they dominate the global landscape. But beyond the Atlantic you will find another giants: SAP. In 2023, the company generated sales of 31.2 billion euros and employed over 107,000 people worldwide, with around 25,300 working in Germany. This makes SAP one of the largest software manufacturers in the world, according to Microsoft and IBM, and the most valuable German company.
The beginnings of SAP in Weinheim
The success story of SAP began in 1972 when five visionary entrepreneurs-Dietmar Hopp, Hasso Plattner, Claus Wellenreuther, Klaus Tschira and Hans-Werner Hector-launched the "System analysis program development" in Weinheim. Originally based in Mannheim, the company soon moved to Walldorf, where it has been firmly rooted since then. This city in the Rhein-Neckar district is not only a geography on the map, but also a center for technological developments and innovation.
focus on artificial intelligence and cloud services
In recent years, SAP has adapted its business strategy to meet the trends of the digital world. The focus is increasingly on artificial intelligence and cloud services, which not only positions SAP as an innovative software provider, but also as an essential partner for companies that have to assert themselves in an increasingly digital world. This shows how flexible and forward -looking SAP acts in a dynamic market.
The company is still highly valued by the employees and is considered one of the best employers in Baden-Württemberg. Despite the challenges and changes within the workforce, the cohesion remains strong. This is a remarkable aspect that distinguishes the company from others in the industry.
Another interesting point is the international orientation of SAP. Nevertheless, the company has never forgotten its roots. All five founders previously worked at IBM, which illustrates the deep connections to the US software industry. SAP have shaped these international experiences in the past.
The connections to America are also shown in corporate management. SAP was led by an American, Bill McDermott, and managers Jennifer Morgan and Christian Klein led the company together from 2010 to 2020. Today is small CEO and is responsible for preparing the company for future challenges.
SAP remains active in the region by supporting local initiatives and having sponsorship engagements, such as at the SAP Arena in Mannheim or as the main sponsor of the successful football club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, whose co-founder Dietmar Hopp is one of the SAP founders. These tight bonds for the home region are not only a homage to the company's history, but also a sign of social responsibility and commitment.
