Coffee tune: One billion euros for Germany's most popular enjoyment!

In 2023, the German customs administration took astonishing 62.4 billion euros in consumption taxes, which makes around 40% of total customs levies of 158 billion euros! Coffee, the most popular hot drink of the Germans with a per capita consumption of 169 liters, plays a central role and brings around one billion euros a year through the coffee tax to the state coffers.

The tradition of coffee consumption goes back to the 18th century when the popularity of the drink grew so rapidly that private imports were banned in the Prussian kingdom. Today the coffee remains a precious luxury food that not only enriches the everyday life of the Germans, but also makes a significant contribution to state income.
