New bridge over the Panke: improved cycle and footpaths in Bernau

important step for nature conservation and mobility in Bernau

The new bridge over the Panke, which is part of the Berlin-Usedom long-distance cycle path, is becoming an important project for the Bernau region. This reinforced concrete construction will not only improve traffic conditions for cyclists and pedestrians, but also meet important nature conservation requirements.

a project with several advantages

The old tank bridge, which has been affected in functionality and safe in recent years, had a small height of only one meter. Modernization required constantly increasing environmental requirements. The new building offers a significantly larger light height of 90 centimeters, which means that the water flow of the Panke can continue to flow unhindered even at maximum water levels.

"The new bridge has a width of 6.36 meters and also enables the installation of Otterbermen," explains Torsten Balk, head of the company for civil engineering and green spaces in the Bernau building authority. Otterbermen are artificial bank strips that support the habitat of Ottern - an important aspect to meet the requirements of the Federal Nature Conservation Act.

financing and infrastructure

The city of Bernau is investing around 550,000 euros in the bridge project, which is partly funded by financial resources from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. This shows the city's commitment not only to improve mobility, but also to promote cycling as a sustainable alternative.

temporary solutions for cyclists

Currently there is a signposted makeshift bypass for cyclists, while the bridge is still under construction. These temporary solutions are necessary to ensure that the long -distance cycling trail remains usable during the construction work.

a sustainable future for Bernau

The new path could have a positive impact on nature and traffic for Bernau. Construction is an example of the social trend of not only planning infrastructure projects according to efficiency, but also taking ecological aspects into account. By creating a better connection between city and nature, traffic is more sustainable, which benefits the environment and at the same time increases the quality of life of the residents.
