Sanitary and nutrient turn: Handbook shows ways to sustainable recycling fertilizers!

The interdisciplinary research project "circulating" has published groundbreaking approaches to the sanitary and nutrient turn after three years of intensive work. The focus is on a new manual that serves as a practical guide for municipalities, planning, agricultural actors and interested parties. It offers technical and ecological possibilities for circulation of human excretions in the form of recycling fertilizers, which harbors considerable potential for environmental protection and resource conservation. The innovative recycling facility in Eberswalde, the first of its kind in Germany, collects and hygienized urine and faeces for agricultural use.

The manual presents the results from research and development and shows how sustainable transformations in the circular economy can look specific. State Secretary Michael Kellner praised the new paths in nutrient recycling and emphasized the importance of the circular economy in all areas of life. The positive response to recycling fertilizers, as can be seen from surveys among organic cultivation associations, shows the broad social acceptance. The manual was presented on October 17, 2024 at a final event in Berlin and will be available for download from mid -December in a supplementary version.
