First breeding of the flamingos in the Eberswalde zoo: a success for species protection and community

The Eberswalder Zoo recently announced significant progress in the area of animal breeding: since July 11th and 16th, 2024, two young pinklamingos have enriched the animal ensemble. The director of the Zoo, Paulina Ostrowska, officially welcomed the chicks on Friday, August 2, 2024. This is not only a gratifying event for the zoo, but also an important step in rearing these beautiful animal species.

The role of Eberswalder Zoo in species protection

Rosaflamingos are fascinating birds that occur in many parts of the world, including Germany. Their impressive size of 120 to 140 cm and their characteristic color make them a highlight in zoological facilities. The Eberswalder Zoo is proud of its flamingos, which also includes a group of 17 dwarf flamingos who came from Karlsruhe to the Barnim region in 1994. The flaming coats are reared in two different variants. A chick is looked after as a hand rack, which means that the zookeepers are particularly intensively involved in care. Zooinspektor Matthias Hoff and his team lovingly take care of the daily feeding that take place every two-hour. The second chick, on the other hand, remains with his parents, which is referred to as a natural brood. These different methods show the flexibility and commitment of the zoo employees in young talent.
