Brown Bear Control unit: District Administrator calls for stricter measures in Bavaria

Bavarian district administrator is committed to protection against brown bears - ministers informed

A growing number of brown bear sightings in the south of Bavaria has prompted the district administrator of Oberallgäu, Indra Baier-Müller, to request strict measures to protect the population. Baier-Müller, member of the Free Voters, suggested that to establish an armed unit to control brown bears in Bavaria in order to be able to react quickly in an emergency.

brown bears in Bavaria: counties in the south should be better prepared

The south of Bavaria, especially the alpine regions, is the focus of the Baier-Müller initiative. Due to bear hikes from northern Italy via Austria to Bavaria, bears were increased. Around 100 brown bears now live in the Italian province of Trentino, which are native to a resettlement project.

In order to be prepared for possible bear migrations, representatives of the districts of Ostallgäu, Traunstein and Rosenheim met at the invitation of Baier-Müller in Sonthofen. They advocate a review of the legal protection status of the brown bears in order to enable local authorities to act quickly, including the possibility of killing potentially dangerous animals.

Bavarian brown bear management plan is to be revised

The district administrator urgently calls for a revision of the Bavarian Braunbären Management plan from 2007. This was created after the tragic death of the Bear Bruno, which was considered a problem bear and was killed at the time. However, Baier-Müller emphasizes that it is not about shy bears that avoid people, but about measures to ensure the safety of the population.

In addition to the control measures, Baier-Müller proposes measures to inform the population and tourists. This includes lectures, brochures and educational films to sensitize the behavior in the event of a bear encounter. Furthermore, it is to be checked how safe waste disposal in the affected regions can be introduced and financed, similar to how this has already been practiced in other bear regions such as Canada.

These measures should help to enable better coexistence between humans and brown bear in the alpine regions of Bavaria and to protect the population effectively.
