DAAD reveals funding record 2023 in German universities

New ranking: universities awarded for DAAD funding

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) recently published the funding balance sheets for 2023. These show which universities received the largest funding amounts and how many students were supported by DAAD grants.

An important aspect in the rankings was the total amount of DAAD funding, at which universities in Berlin, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony took the leading positions. The Technical University of Munich led over 15 million euros in funding, followed by the Technical University of Berlin and the Technical University of Dresden. Interestingly, however, it was universities such as the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences, the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences and the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, which were most successful in relation to their size.

In terms of DAAD scholarship holders, North Rhine-Westphalia was a leader, followed by Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Most scholarship holders were funded at the Technical University of Munich, the Free University of Berlin and other renowned universities. Smaller universities such as the Wildau University of Technology and the Cologne University of Media were also particularly successful in the number of funded students in relation to the total number.

In the field of project and program funding, universities again shone in Berlin, Saxony, Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia. The technical universities in Berlin, Munich and Dresden received the highest funding for DAAD projects. When awarded in relation to the number of students, the Schmalkalden, Karlsruhe and Magdeburg-Stendal universities performed best.

The DAAD has published the funding balance for its member universities annually since 2000. These provide detailed information on individual support as well as programs and projects. The top 100 universities with the highest funding contributions are lifted out and set in relation to the total number of students.

The publication of the funding balance sheets not only contributes to transparency, but also rewards the commitment and achievements of universities in the field of international cooperation and promotion of students. It is an important step to further promote the diversity and quality of the academic programs in Germany.
