Erlangen among the top 10: Healthy cities in Germany 2024
The health study of Zava shows which cities in Germany offer the greatest potential for a healthy lifestyle. Erlangen shines as a shining example, while Munich remains behind the expectations in the ranking.
Erlangen: A city with many advantages
In a recent study by the Zava online doctor's office, the healthiest cities in Germany were determined. The city of Erlangen in Middle Franconia has proven to be outstanding and takes ninth place in the ranking with an impressive healthcore of 8.65 points. The 3370 hiking trails per 100,000 inhabitants are particularly striking, which offer opportunities for active relaxation. The air quality, which was rated with a score of 5.55, also contributes to the high quality of life.

Heilbronn | 9.43 |
Göttingen | 9.06 |
Karlsruhe | 8.95 |
Trier | 8.95 |

Munich: In midfield of the health study
In contrast, the Bavarian capital of Munich is in contrast, which with a score of only 5.66 points in the ranking of the healthiest cities remains significantly behind expectations. This raises questions of how the infrastructure and the range of leisure activities can contribute to the health of the citizens. Nuremberg, the second largest city of Bavaria, also only cuts it moderately with 5.23 points and is therefore in the lower area of the ranking. This shows a contradictory reality that underlines the modern challenges of the big cities.
Health in the federal states
The entire study also helped to make it clear that not only cities but also federal states are in competition. Saxony has reached the highest score among the federal states with 8.73 points, while Bavaria is sixth place with 7.82 points. These rankings not only give an insight into the living conditions, but also challenge political decision -makers to start where improvements are necessary.
The importance of the results for the population
The knowledge from the Zava study can be equally revealing for citizens and urban planners. They offer a valuable basis for future health initiatives and provide information about how better planning and investments in leisure and health facilities can increase the quality of life. In particular, it would be important for Munich to take targeted measures to improve health offers and to catch up with the gap compared to other cities.
