New construction of the German-German museum: a milestone in Mödlareuth

The municipality of Mödlareuth, which also bears the nickname "Little Berlin" due to its special location between Bavaria and Thuringia, is currently experiencing significant change. In recent years, the number of visitors to the German-German Museum has increased significantly, which emphatically illustrates the need for extended premises and exhibitions.

meaning of the new construction project

The German-German Museum plays a central role as a memorial for German division after the Second World War. The unique history and the geographical division of the small village through the former border between the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR make the museum an important place of education for the public. The new building is therefore not only a structural novelty, but also represents progress in dealing with German history.

Current status of the expansion

The raw and wood construction of the new museum section is almost completed, while the craftsmen are currently busy with the roofing and sanitary work. According to a spokeswoman for the Hof district office, the construction work is on schedule, so that an opening will be sought in the coming year. The new exhibition area of 500 square meters is supplemented by additional rooms for exchange exhibitions and the presentation of the extensive archive material.

financing and support

The total costs for the construction project amount to around 22 million euros. The financing is ensured by a mix of state and local support: The federal government and the Free State of Bavaria have each provided 5.6 million euros, while Thuringia contributes 800,000 euros to the area on their side. In addition, the High Franconia Foundation supports the project with 4.2 million euros, which underlines the importance of this memorial.

rising number of visitors as an indicator of success

The increase in visitor numbers to between 70,000 and 90,000 is a clear indicator of the growing interest in German history and division. In the early years, only around 20,000 people visited the museum annually. This grown public interest is not only remarkable, but also shows that the topics of German division and reunification are important for many people.

Future view for "Little Berlin"

Hofs District Administrator Oliver Bär emphasized that the expansion of the German-German Museum is of national importance. The creation of new premises should not only take into account the high number of visitors, but also raise awareness of the history of the division of Germany. Mödlareuth has therefore not only established itself as a place of memory, but also as an important location.
