Heavy thunderstorms loosens the degeneration of the mura - access to Neuschwanstein blocked

A heavy thunderstorm recently caused massive landslides in Schwangau, which made access to one of the most famous castles in Germany, Neuschwanstein, at times impassable. On Monday, September 3, heavy rain led to a small stream stepped over the shores. The water masses tore soft earth and rubble with them, which led to an exit. This natural disaster required immediate measures by the local fire brigades, which were used in the night until the early hours of the morning to clear the streets again.

The areas affected by the Muren concerned both the Neuschwanstein fairytale castle and the nearby Hohenschwangau Castle. While the streets were initially impassable, access could be restored a little later. However, it should be noted that visitors can currently only get on foot or by carriage via Neuschwansteinstrasse. The usual bus connections via the youth road are set until further notice until the streets are completely relieved.

Muren and their dangers

MUREN, also known as mudslings, are a common phenomenon in mountainous regions and can have devastating effects. In such events, water mixes with earth, rubble and wood and whizzes into the valley at great speed. Muries can reach up to sixty kilometers per hour in the Alps and are therefore extremely dangerous. They not only threaten the infrastructure, but can also cause serious damage to dwellings.

In this specific case, the operation of two hotel systems in the area was also affected. In the Hotel Ameron Neuschwanstein, small amounts of water penetrated into different areas, but the damage for the guests remained minimal and there were no noteworthy impairments. This is not the first time that the hotel is affected by a degenerate from a mura, because three years ago a similar incident led to a seven -month closure.

The Hotel Alpenstuben also reported a "blue eye". Although water and mud up to a height of 50 centimeters penetrated into the basement area, the hotel operation was not impaired. The exact amount of damage remained unclear at this point, but here too the effects on the guests can be classified as low.

Muren exits are a recurring problem in the Alpine region. It was only in August, just a short time before this incident, that there was a rock and scree slide in Mittenwald, which showered a railway line and paralyzed train traffic for several days. In addition, near the Ettaler Mühle Muren, they gave up a street under themselves. Such events illustrate the fragile conditions in the mountainous regions and the potential dangers that can bring nature forces.

It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and whether further measures must be taken to ensure accessibility. The unpredictable autumn weather state will certainly be the focus of those responsible in the coming weeks to ensure the safety of visitors and residents.
