Opposition in Oberbillwerder: Attacks on the large -scale construction project of the SPD and the Greens

new perspectives for housing in Hamburg

In the Hamburg district of Oberbillwerder, plans for the creation of living space for 15,000 people from the SPD and the Greens have been presented. But the opposition, consisting of the CDU and the left, has spoken out against the project, which leads to heated discussions.

One of the main criticism of the opposition is the extremely high construction cost forecast of over 4,400 euros per square meter for the planned apartments. This represents an increase of around 65 percent compared to the original calculations eight years ago. This doubts whether affordable living space can be realized.

Another aspect that is focused on is the planned integration of office and commercial space to create jobs for 4,000 to 5,000 people. The reduction of the resting traffic in the public street space is also considered exemplary to make the car as superfluous as possible in this new district.

It is discussed that Oberbillwerder should not only be a pure place of residence, but also has to offer a certain variety and sustainability. This is contrasting to past major projects with large settlements that have had a negative impact on the cityscape.

The planned urban development project also met with criticism with regard to the lack of commitment from the Senate for Housing. For some critics, the development of Oberbillwerder symbolizes an early environmental risk. On the other hand, the Senate emphasizes that no final decisions have been made and that a third of the living space should be capped socially and in terms of price.

The opposition, especially the CDU, argues that the required apartments could be created by densification. However, this strategy also has its challenges and can be more expensive than the new building on the green meadow.

Current citizens and organizations currently have the opportunity to express criticism of the planning documents by September. A final decision about the project is expected at the beginning of next year, in the middle of the hot phase of the election campaign.

In view of the constant population growth in Hamburg and the tense housing situation, the Oberbillwerder project is becoming increasingly important. It remains to be seen how the discussion will develop and which solutions will ultimately be found to cope with the challenges of the lack of housing in the city.
