million tenants are entitled to reimbursement of their CO2 costs
This year, millions of tenants with their own gas contract have the opportunity to reclaim part of their CO2 costs from the landlord for the first time. This new regulation primarily affects households with gas days, which comprises around three million households* in Germany. Finanztip, Germany's leading gunner, explains step by step how tenants can get their money back.
The CO2 price is the amount that tenants have to pay for the emission of climate-damaging carbon dioxide due to their gas heating. This price is charged on the annual gas bill. From 2023, landlords must cover a certain percentage of CO2 costs, depending on the energy consumption and the energy consumption. As a result, tenants are entitled to reimbursement of their CO2 costs.
"Tenants who live in older, inefficient buildings and therefore have to heat a lot should definitely be challenged by the landlord," says Finanztip-Energie expert Benjamin Weigl. The Federal Government wants to motivate landlords to renovate buildings energetically and incorporate environmentally friendly heating.
An example: A model household with a living space of 100 square meters and gas consumption of 18,000 kilowatt hours paid around 105 euros for CO2 costs last year. According to the financial tip computer, the landlord must take over half, i.e. more than 50 euros. Since CO2 prices are expected to continue to increase in the coming years, tenants can reclaim more money every year.
In order to apply for the refund, tenants with gas days heating only need the invoice of your gas provider. FinanzTip's CO2 computer automatically calculates the proportion that the landlord has to take over. Within a year, tenants can claim their claim in writing by sending the sample letter from FinanzTip together with the gas bill by email or letter to the landlord.
Important: If the landlord takes care of the heat supply, for example by a central heating in the basement of an apartment building, he is responsible for dividing the CO2 costs. In such cases, tenants should check whether the division in the additional cost accounting is correct.
