Alarming increase in queer anti -violence in Berlin's streets!

The Berlin Senate Department has published the third monitoring report on queer -anti -queer violence in the capital and thus sets an important sign in the fight against discrimination. In this report, which serves as a unique instrument to combat hate violence against LSBTIQ+person, an alarming increase is documented. A total of 588 cases were recorded in Berlin in 2023, which represents an unprecedented maximum. In particular, the victims of bi+sexual people are the focus of the current data, since their special needs and experiences in society often remain invisible, as the Senator for Labor, Social Affairs and Integration, Cansel Kızıltepe emphasizes. The sad reality is that many incidents are nevertheless not reported, which the number of unreported persons increasingly increases, as the Berlin Senate Administration reported.

A look at the numbers and trends

According to the report, there is a constant increase in cases of violence and discrimination. BI+persons for whom a special study was carried out are particularly affected. This is gaining in importance, since many bi+sexual people at the same time make discrimination experiences based on their sexual orientation while they live in same -sex partnerships. This creeping process of invisibility leads to the consolidation of enemy attitudes in society. At the same time, the report shows that the visibility of queer life in Berlin is closely related to the increase in attacks. The police statistics reflect the reality that the public space, especially on weekends, often becomes the setting of attacks, which is the report of the Berlin State Office for Equal Treatment.

A terrifying trend is also the increase in crimes against queer institutions. Abuses on clubs, cafés and other contact points of the LSBTIQ+ community have become more common and strain the affected rooms both emotionally and financially. Facilities are always faced with homophobic insults and threats, which significantly affects everyday life. Berlin politics emphasizes urgency to address this problem and thus improve the security situation for all queer citizens: in particular through the establishment of specific advisory services.
