In Berlin, the air for overloaded bus traffic is thinner! The transport administration has presented exciting plans for a new M41 tram line, which is to lead from the pulsating Potsdamer Platz to Schönweide from 2035. This connection will link the districts of Mitte, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Treptow-Köpenick and is a crucial step to relieve bus traffic, such as the Tagesspiegel reported.

The current M41 bus line, which runs between the main train station and Schönewide, has been overloaded for years. The new tram line, which is to include a distance of around 14 kilometers, is expected to cost 175 million euros. At an information event in Kreuzberg, the transport administration presented the first results of a basic examination that checks and evaluated various route courses. Citizens had the opportunity to contribute their opinions and proposals, which met with great interest.

The first steps to the new tram line

The planning is still at the very beginning, as Imke Steinmeyer, the new head of the mobility department, emphasized. The event served not only the information, but also for citizen participation. At various stations, the participants were able to get to know the course of the project and the planned sections of the route. From Potsdamer Platz via Hallesches gate to Schöneweide - several possible route courses have been outlined for each section.

Especially the Blucherplatz interface, which is supposed to connect sections A and B, attracted the attention of the residents. The transport administration has tried to take into account the interests of passengers, BVG and environmental aspects. One participant expressed the desire that Berlin should get away faster from private transport and invest more in rails. "The tram has to be finished earlier, not only in ten years," he said urgently.

a trend towards the tram

The plans for the new M41 tram line are part of a larger trend in Berlin. The alliance "Pro tram" recently demanded that the tram network be expanded to 485 kilometers by 2050, which would mean a doubling of the existing routes. This initiative could significantly relieve the city and improve mobility, such as Berlin Live reported.

The tram has proven to be a successful means of transport that is not only environmentally friendly, but also represents an inexpensive alternative to bus lines. The costs for the construction of new tram lines are significantly lower compared to subway expansion. One example is the 2.2-kilometer-long new line to the Turmstrasse, which cost 33 million euros, while the expansion of the subway line 5 in the middle devoured 525 million euros.

Citizen participation continues, and interested parties can still participate in the planning process online until November 21. The exact information and route plans can be viewed on the website berlin.de . The future of Berlin local transport could soon take a whole new direction!
