Exploding property prices in Berlin: A conversation with building contractor Christoph Gröner

Christoph Gröner, a well -known building contractor in Germany with a headquarters in Berlin, has not built in the capital for two years. As a large donor of the Berlin CDU, he donated a total of 820,000 euros in 2020. Despite his political support for the CDU, Gröner sees himself as a convinced social democrat. It is committed to ecological building, although the construction costs have increased enormously.

The rising property prices in Berlin have prompted Gröner to hold back since 2022. More and more Berliners cannot afford rents, which influences real estate prices. Gröner emphasizes that the residents' purchasing power determines the real estate market. Since 2019, his company has no more investments in Berlin due to the unprofitable new construction projects in Berlin.

Despite his reluctance in Berlin, Gröner is active all over Germany, with projects in cities such as Cologne, Leipzig and Karlsruhe. He criticizes the political discussion about affordable living space and the lack of civil class compensation in Berlin. He calls for more efficient use of resources for housing and less ideological blockages to quickly create more apartments.
