Conflict in Berlin: Uni blocks container village for refugees

The wastewap on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, which the Senate has intended for the construction of a container village for 260 refugees, encounters resistance, especially at the Free University (FU). The university management feels over and emphasized that it was not integrated into the decision -making processes. Although the FU is fundamentally willing to support refugees, it indicates that the property in question is required for its own construction projects and has already provided short -term support in the past.

The FU suggests that the Federal Institute for Real Estate Tasks uses empty buildings at the Thielallee 92 location for refugee accommodation, as this would not influence its own blueprints. The special representative for refugee issues at the Senate, Broemme, emphasizes that the accommodation of refugees on idle areas such as Thielallee 63 could be a temporary measure and asks for a temporal statement for the start of construction of the planned building.

The Senate approved the construction of 16 other container villages at the beginning of March in order to counteract the acute lack of living space for refugees. The ruling mayor Wegner said that although it was difficult to reach an agreement, further locations for the container villages are required. The planned locations mainly concentrate on the eastern part of the city, with individual districts such as Pankow already take a high proportion of refugees and are now experiencing additional stress.

Despite the ridicule and criticism on the network regarding the resistance of the FU against the container village on the universe area there are different views on the problem. While some emphasize the need for further accommodation for refugees, the FU is strongly criticized for its negative attitude on social media. The conflict illustrates the challenges in the search for suitable areas for the accommodation of refugees in Berlin.
