Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde: Reduction of space as a second best sponge city project 2024
The redesign of the forecourt at the Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde recently awarded the rainwater agency Berlin as the second best project in the 2024 rainy competition. This is a significant recognition for the construction work, which is led by the Lichtenberg street and green area office.
District City Councilor Filiz Küllüoğlu from Bündnis 90/Die Grünen was pleased with the award and praised the commitment of the employees of the street and green space office. The redesign of the forecourt, which is expected to be completed in December 2025, aims to improve the quality of stay by creating shady areas and seating.
The project is implemented according to plans of the Franz Reschke landscape architecture. The existing pavement is reused, but the rainwater is no longer derived into the sewage system, but is left in trouble in Mulden by lively soil layers. This measure helps to realize the vision of a sponge city.
The range of attractive and functional public places is therefore significantly expanded in Berlin, which will make a positive contribution to the quality of life in the city. The recognition of the project illustrates the importance of sustainable urban development and the use of ecological solutions in urban space.
