Members of the parties in Berlin: Who wins, who loses?
In Berlin, several parties recorded an increase in members last year, as a current dpa survey shows. CDU, Greens, Left and AfD were able to increase their number of members, while the SPD and FDP had to accept declines. The number of Greens members rose to an impressive 15,425 by the end of December 2024, which corresponds to an increase of 2,444 members compared to the previous year. The left growth from 7.162 to 8,319 members and the AfD also improved from 1,307 to 1,586 members, reported [rbb24] (https://www.rbbb24.de/pielmtrag/2025/01/berlin-jarties- Mehrt- Zuwachs.html).
The CDU, which also recorded an increase, was able to increase the status to 12,141 members by the end of November, although the exact figures for 2024 are not yet fully available. The SPD remains the largest party in Berlin, but its number of members fell from 17,939 to 17,855. The FDP, on the other hand, experienced a significant decline from 4,006 to 3,742 members. The alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) founded for the last election now has 115 members, and according to state chief Alexander King, a deliberate, controlled growth is shown.
AfD under observation
The AfD, strong in the focus since its foundation in 2013, supports right -wing populist positions and is under observation of the protection of the constitution. This party has played a controlling role in German politics in recent years, not least because of its representation in 14 state parliament, where it holds a total of 263 mandates. While the last Bundestag elections resulted in a decline to 10.3 percent, the AfD in Saxony remains considerably present at 27.5 percent. Almost 42 percent of the respondents are to check a ban on the AfD, which illustrates the tense debate about the party, reported Statista.
