Child poverty in Berlin: Neukölln relies on structural solutions
In Neukölln, more than 30 percent of all children grow up in households with SGB II. Over 20 percent of children and adolescents in Berlin are considered at risk of poverty. In order to enable children and families in poverty situations to have the same opportunities for health, education and social participation, the district office Neukölln is committed together with the project "Participation - Perspectives for Families" for the implementation of the Berlin strategy against child poverty. The project team accompanies the development of poverty -sensitive and effective services, offers and facilities in the districts. So far, eight districts in Berlin have already signed a cooperation agreement on the process support by the project team, including Neukölln.
City Councilor Sarah Nagel emphasizes the importance of dealing with the topic of child poverty and is happy about the increased cooperation with participation. Since the beginning of the year, the measures for the prevention of child and family poverty have been bundled in the district's core team and further strengthened together with participation. The Berlin strategy against child and family poverty plays a crucial role here and is guidelines for all activities to promote participation, education, healthy growing up and material care.
The definition of poverty is currently based on two different calculations. Children are considered to be at risk of poverty if they live in a household that has less than 60 percent of the average of all income. In 2021, the risk of poverty in Germany was for various household types for certain monthly income limits.
The efforts of the Neukölln district and participation project show the need for structural solutions to combat child and family poverty. Through close cooperation between administrations, providers and facilities, a framework is to be created that offers the same opportunities for all children and families. This is an important contribution to democratic coexistence and social peace in the city society.
