Protests in Görlitzer Park: Zaunbau ensures dispute and threatening letters!
The fence building around Görlitzer Park in Berlin-Kreuzberg, which has been controversial since 2023, continues to ensure heated debates and protest. The protest initiative "Our Görli remains open" has sent threatening letters to different construction companies in order to prevent them from participating in the project. This development is interpreted by the group as an expression of civil disobedience against the fence building perceived as populist and inhuman. The ruling mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner (CDU), sees the project as a necessary measure to contain drug trafficking and violent crime in the park.
Originally, the fence project was planned for 2024, but due to multiple delays, the time frame has now expanded until 2025. The Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, which is led by the Greens, has already taken legal action against the project. While the CDU has convicted the threatening letter in the district and also announced legal steps, the group "Görli 24/7" calls on its colleagues to take itself against fence construction.
Details of the fence project
The tender for fence construction was published by Grün Berlin in early March, the application deadline runs until April 2, 2025. Construction is scheduled for April 28, but could possibly be delayed until May or even June 2025. According to the tender, materials for 50 meters of metal fence systems, 16 goals, two sliding scores, eight large turning crosses and 46 electrical locking systems are necessary. The construction work should be completed by December 20, 2025.
Despite the official plans, resistance to fencing grows. The initiatives have already completed actions in which they cut fences in the park. Clara Herrmann, the mayor of the district from the Green Group, criticizes the threats of the initiatives and advocates more social support as a solution to the problems in the park.
protest actions announced
For May 1st, a big protest party is planned under the motto "Free Görli - Rave Against the Zaun" in Görlitzer Park. At this event, a high number of participants is expected, which will then lead to the large radical demonstration in Kreuzberg and Neukölln in the form of a demonstration train. The police are already preparing for possible protests. The Situation in and around Görlitzer Park remains tense, and the outcome of the fence project is hot among the citizens of Berlin.
