District office Spandau rejects wind energy use in Rieselfeld

The district office Spandau has spoken out against a possible use of the Spandauer Rieselfelder and the Spandau Forest to obtain wind energy. The Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Companies had commissioned an examination, the results of which have now been published. The Rieselfelder and the Spandauer Forst were shown as potential areas for possible locations of wind turbines. District Mayor Frank Werwig emphasized the importance of the Rieselfelder and the Spandau Forest as local recreation areas and important retreat areas for animals that should be protected. He regretted that the district office was not involved in the dialogue in advance in order to assess possible potential together. District City Councilor Thorsten Schatz underlined the concerns about nature and climate protection and emphasized that not every potential should be used. However, he signaled the willingness to search for location in Spandau and emphasized the willingness to talk to the district.

The Rieselfelder and the Spandauer Forst are important green areas in Spandau and serve as local recreation areas for the citizens. They are also living space for different animal and plant species and are under nature conservation. The possible use of these areas for wind energy generation would have a significant impact on nature and ecological balance. It is therefore understandable that the Spandau district office rejects this proposal.

The table below gives an overview of some important facts on wind energy in Germany:

| Year | Wind energy systems (number) | Share of total current consumption |
| —— | ————————— | ————————- |
| 2015 | 26.132 | 13.3% |
| 2016 | 28.218 | 14% |
| 2017 | 29.213 | 14.8% |
| 2018 | 29.299 | 14.8% |
| 2019 | 29.563 | 15% |

The data show that wind energy is a significant share of total current consumption in Germany and has increased continuously in recent years. This underlines the relevance of the topic for energy policy and the discussion about locations for wind turbines.
