The Howoge Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH plans to build a community school for up to 1,300 pupils on the island of Gartenfeld in the Spandau district. This school will be part of the “The New Garden Field” city district and will probably be used from the school year 2029/2030. The architecture of the building was selected in the context of a competition process, whereby the contribution by Gernot Schulz Architecture GmbH in cooperation with Urbanegestalt PartgmbB emerged as a winner.
The location of the school, opposite the Belgium Hall and on the square on Planstrasse, is to form the entrance to the “The New Garden Field” quarters. The architecture of the building takes up the industrial history of the location and integrates a variety of rooms and functions for different uses, including a composite location that is operated by the Spandau district.
The community school is built as a comm, school according to the Berlin learning house concept, whereby commitments like small schools work in the big school. There will also be a sports hall and extensive open spaces that can be used by clubs and sports groups. The winning design of the competition was praised by the jury for its successful integration into the new urban planning and the versatile uses.
The competition for the choice of architect was carried out by the RPW competition and 15 participants were selected from 65 applications. In addition to the winner, Gernot Schulz Architecture GmbH, other articles also received recognitions for their ideas for the design of the community school. The construction of this school marks an important step in the Berlin school building offensive and will create both urgently needed school places as well as a significant socio -cultural institution in the district.
