Volkshochschule Berlin Spandau starts course 'Klimafit' from March 2024

With the start of the “Klimafit” training offer at the Berlin Spandau adult education center from March 6, 2024, citizens have the opportunity to deal with the global, regional and local effects of the climate crisis. The course aims to enable the participants to actively participate in climate protection and contribute to reducing emissions. Due to the networking of committed fellow citizens, climate protection should be promoted together.

The climate crisis has long since reached Spandau, with more frequent heavy rain events, droughts and increasing heat days. The adult education course "Klimafit" offers the opportunity to deal with these challenges and to develop concrete measures for local climate protection. The course comprises six evenings, four of which take place in presence and two online. The participants get an insight into the Spandau climate protection management and learn how to participate. There is also the possibility to exchange ideas with experts and initiatives. The course content is based on well -founded scientific findings that illustrate the urgency of action.

The challenge of the climate crisis is undeniable because 2023 was the warmest worldwide since 1881. Germany even recorded an annual mean temperature of 2.4 degrees Celsius above the internationally valid reference value. The climate scientist Dr. Renate Treffeisen warns that the warming could increase up to three degrees Celsius by the end of the century if no measures are taken. The "Klimafit" course wants to show the participating ways how they can reduce CO2 emissions through everyday behavior changes and initiate climate-protecting measures in politics and finances.

The "Klimafit" course was developed by the WWF Germany and the Helmholtz Research Association "Reklim" and received the "National Award-Education for Sustainable Development (BNE)" at the end of last year. The educational project has been funded by the national climate protection initiative of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection since January 2022.

Overall, the course offers a comprehensive opportunity to deal with the local effects of the climate crisis and actively contribute to climate protection. The participants receive a "climate" certificate that they distinguish them as a multiplier for municipal climate protection. Further information on the course and registration can be found on the VHS Spandau website.
