Tables in need: fewer and fewer foods for hungry Berliners!
The boards in Germany are at the limit! In view of the exploding food prices, 1.6 million people are now dependent on the support of the tables, which corresponds to an increase of 50 percent since the beginning of the Ukraine War. Around 60 percent of the boards have already reduced the edition of food. A third has set up temporary absorption stops or waiting lists to cope with the rush, as Andreas Steppuhn, the chairman of the Tafel roof association, reports. This means that many plates begin to ration to ration, in order to be able to help as many people as possible, as well as from Domradio.de reports.
Situation in Berlin
The situation in Berlin presents itself somewhat more stable compared to other regions. Tafel boss, Sabine Werth, reports that the number of people who are regularly supplied with food remains constant at 72,000 per month. But there are also restrictions here: four out of 49 output points had to impose an admission stop. The Deacon Hannes Wolf from the Evangelical Community of Epiphanies observes an increase in the needy and calls for supporting volunteers for the Christmas business. Each individual can get involved and help to pack around 15,000 bags for the needy, as can be read in the B.Z.
The demands on politics are getting louder. Stepuhn calls for a serious progress in combating poverty, including measures such as a financed basic child protection, poverty -resistant pensions and affordable living space. The future of the boards is on the brink, while more and more people in Germany are dependent on their help. The Tafel movement, which has grown in the past two decades, could face unsolvable problems without political support.
