Memorial Day 2024: Leadership in Memorial Köpenicker Blood Week
On January 27, 2024, a public leadership will take place at the Köpenicker Blood Week Memorial in Berlin on the occasion of the nationwide commemorative day to the victims of National Socialism. This day was proclaimed by the former Federal President Roman Herzog in 1996 to commemorate the liberation of the National Socialist extermination camp on Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27, 1945
The Köpenick Blood Week memorial is reminiscent of the "Köpenicker Blood Week", an unprecedented wave of arrests and violence by the National Socialists, which lasted from June 21 to 26, 1933. During this period, several hundred politically dissenters and Jews were delayed and abused, with at least 23 people died. These events are representative of the phase of power, in which the National Socialists acted with intimidation, torture and murder, publicly and before the eyes of the fellow citizens. The memorial is located in the former Köpenicker district court prison and can be visited on Tuesdays, Thursdays, on Saturdays and Sundays.
