Shaved memory: New exhibition on the Berlin Wall in Köpenick

on November 8, 2024, at 6:00 p.m., the mostly expected exhibition "shared memory. The Berlin Wall in Treptow. A search for traces" will open in the popular Museum Köpenick in Berlin! An event that will not only captivate those interested in history, but also everyone who wants to experience the dramatic stories behind the symbol of the division.

The district of Treptow-Köpenick, a place with deep roots in the past of Germany, plays a central role in the story around the Berlin Wall. Here, along a 17 km long border between Neukölln and Kreuzberg, the wall cut through once living residential areas. Streets have been cut abruptly, neighbors lost in the fog of the division and families became divided. Marco Brauchmann, the district councilor for further training, school, culture and sport, emphasized the profound effects of the wall on the everyday life of people and district history.

a look into the past

The exhibition offers a unique access to the fates associated with the memories of the wall. Fragments of German division history are viewed from a district history perspective. What did the massive changes meant that occurred in 1961 and 1989? How do the experiences of the citizens of back then shape today's life in Treptow-Köpenick?

Visitors can go on an exciting journey through time, with the exhibition illuminating the effects of the border expansion on life in the GDR. The wall was not just a physical building; She also represented a border between hopes, dreams and the hard reality.
