Self -determination law: a dialogue about opportunities and challenges in Berlin

A turning point in the history of Trans*Right can be experienced! On November 13, 2024, prominent voices such as Michaela Dudley and Nora Eckert meet in Berlin to illuminate the groundbreaking self -determination law (SBGG). The place of action? Kiezklub Old School, Dorpfeldstr. 33 - A hotspot for social discussions!

From 7:00 p.m., the stage becomes the scene of an open exchange about the life realities of trans*people who are redefined by the change in the law. After stormy debates in 2024, the outdated and discriminatory transsexual law was finally placed on the files and replaced by the SBGG. A mandatory step that enables many a relieved life!

change in the law in focus

From August 1, 2024, it will finally be possible to easily change not only the first name, but also the gender entry for registry offices. This is a historical opportunity for Trans*, Inter* and non-binary people in order to obtain a more discriminatory access to the change in civil status. But the euphoria is overshadowed by profound questions: How much self -determination remains in a system that still maintains binary structures?

In addition, the reconciliation of the new law with the reforms of parentage and family law is up for discussion. A particularly hot topic, because many trans*parents could encounter uncertainties here. And what about those trans*people who are on the run? Does the new law endanger your rights? These are critical questions that have to be discussed that evening!

Invitation to participate

Admission to the event is free! Registration is not required - everyone is cordially invited to actively participate in the discussion. This event is part of the series “From History to the Present-Places of Historical and Political Education in Treptow-Köpenick”.

For reasons of security and in the sense of a respectful exchange, the organists reserve the right to deny people who belong to right -wing extremists or have previously emerged through inhumane statements. A clear sign against discrimination and for an inclusive society!

This event is a cooperation between several organizations, including the Center for Democracy Treptow-Köpenick and the documentation centers that work for a just and informed public. Be there and design with it!
