Feldkreuz in Biberach: Moving for flood protection successfully completed

In the city of Biberach, a historic field cross was mixed by a few meters. This measure was necessary after extensive flood protection work was carried out in the area of the Hagenbucher trench. Previously, the cross stood in a small depression on an agricultural path between Bergerhausen and Winterreute. Members of the Catholic Church as well as the couple Berta and Hans Kärzle, who have been taking care of the Feldkreuz since 1996, are involved in this decision.

Dean Stefan Ruf blessed the cross at its new location a few days ago. The cross, which was significant for the stoners, was set up in 1996 after they found faith during a pilgrimage in South Tyrol. "This profound experience has motivated us to donate a field cross," explains Hans Kiffer. However, it was a long way from the idea for implementation that also included bureaucratic hurdles.

The way to the new location

The idea of setting up its own field cross occurred in the 1990s after Kifferles had acquired a wooden figure from Christ on the cross. This figure inspired the two to create their own, striking place for faith. Cooperation with the city of Biberach was essential, because the establishment of a field cross requires numerous permits in Germany. "We had to submit a building application and officially lease the square. This is not quite for nothing, even if we don't have to pay anything," explains Hans Kärzle.

The location was chosen strategically because it is located on a walk the couple uses regularly. So you can easily see on the right and maintain the green around the cross. Over the years, they had to replace the original wooden figure, which did not stand by the weather, with a plastic version. Today the wooden figure can be found in the church of St. Josef in Birkendorf.

The new environment of the field cross is now freshly prepared, which means that some time goes by until the grass grows. In order to bridge the waiting time, the stoners put a colorful bouquet of sunflowers under the cross and plan to plant a tree in the cooler season. A massive wooden bench now invites you to linger and pray there.

A beautiful location

The Biberach city administration worked as a support in the coordination of the new location. Mayor Christian Kuhlmann noticed when taking the flood protection measures: "I think that the Feldkreuz is now even more beautiful than in the old place." This opinion shares Mr. Kärzle, since he hopes with his wife that many walkers, joggers or cyclists can now visit the cross and enjoy his calm charisma, as has been in the old location since 1996.

The commitment of the couple Kifferle testifies to a deep connection to faith and community. It is a small but significant gesture that shows how important traditions and places of faith remain in an constantly changing environment. The Feldkreuz is not only a relic of the past, but also a sign of hope and faith for the future.

The importance of field crosses in the region

field crosses have a long tradition in the rural culture of Germany. They are often placed on streets, or near fields and serve not only as a religious symbol, but also as a sign of the protection of the country and the community. In many villages and cities, including Biberach, field crosses are places of prayer and reflection for residents and visitors. The custom of setting up such crosses goes back to the Middle Ages, when they were often built in places of danger or moving around to offer protection.

In rural areas, they also act as landmarks. Your preservation is important to many citizens because they symbolize a piece of home and history. The maintenance of these crosses is often in the hands of committed parishioners who take care of regular maintenance and external appearance. This can also be seen in the stoners who have been looking after the cross for many years.

Current flood protection measures and their influence

In recent years, many municipalities in Germany, including Biberach, have strengthened measures for flood protection. These are often a reaction to increasing weather extreme and heavy rain events that are caused by climate change. The city of Biberach is investing in infrastructure projects to prevent floods and ensure the safety of residents. The work on the Hagenbuch Graben are part of this comprehensive strategy.

The flood -related adjustments can also result in the loss or transfer of traditional objects, as was the case with the Feld Cross. Nevertheless, care in Biberach is careful to maintain the cultural and historical elements of the cityscape, which is reflected in the careful planning and implementation of such projects.

The role of community and identity

The care of the field cross and the initiatives to restore its visibility at a new location show the commitment of the community. Such projects not only promote the feeling of community, but also strengthen local identity. In times of change, be it through infrastructural developments or social dynamics, the support of traditions, such as setting up and maintaining field crosses, remains a constant anchor for the citizens.

The interaction of city administration and committed citizens such as the Käffenles is an example of the way in which local traditions can be reconciled with modern requirements. This form of cooperation significantly contributes to a positive perception of the city and a strong sense of togetherness in the community.
