Chemnitz, Deutschland - On May 15, 2025, Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier, the rector of the Technical University of Chemnitz, the “Crawling Beetle” daycare center. This facility is closely connected to the university and is characterized by its international diversity. Around 130 children from 23 different nations are currently being looked after in the daycare center.

The daycare center "Crawling Beetle" was opened on August 1, 1971 as a children's combination of the Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt and was originally intended exclusively for children of the university. Today the daycare center is an important institution for the families of students and employees of the TU Chemnitz, with around half of the children cared for having at least one parent who studies or works there. The sponsorship changed from the university to the municipality after the political change, and since 1991 the daycare center has been part of the city of Chemnitz.

Prof. Strohmeier praised the importance of these cultural activities and the special promotion of linguistic development, since the common language of the children is German. This not only promotes language acquisition, but also cultural bridges within the diverse group of children.
