Computer science day: Student flows are blown up records in Braunschweig!

On January 27, 2025, the Technical University of Braunschweig experienced an impressive visitor record at the "Day of Computer Science". Over 500 students and 30 teachers from 16 schools, from Burgdorf to Wolfsburg and from Celle to Salzgitter, took part in the event. The day offered a variety of activities that highlighted the importance of computer science today. Professor Sándor Fekete welcomed the participants in the Audimax and emphasized the need to consider computer science as a key qualification.

The program included various topics from teaching and research and included practical offers that gave students an insight into the diverse areas of application of computer science. These included participation offers for robot control, virtual spatial simulations and a Lego laboratory that offered young visitors an interactive learning environment. The university's atmosphere was inspiring and motivating for the prospective computer scientists.

diverse topics and lectures

The content of the event ranged from artificial intelligence (AI) to robotics to system security and computer graphics. Numerous short lectures on exciting topics such as "Chatgpt - How to Learn Learn Neural Networks" and "Do artificial intelligence really understand the 'world'?" drawn the interest of the students. These priorities are particularly relevant because the IT Bachelor's degree at the TU Braunschweig records the highest influx in the current winter semester.

The introduction of compulsory subject in computer science in Lower Saxony schools, which has been taught since the school year 2023/24 from the 10th grade and since this school year from the 9th grade, the focus of the current discussions. The challenges that are accompanied by this were addressed during the event. Professor Fekete emphasized the importance of personal contacts between universities and schools, especially after the insulating times during pandemic.

Future view and support from Ki

The promotion of the use of AI in university formation, as supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), is another aspect that fits in the context of the event. As part of the federal-state initiative "Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education", numerous projects are launched that promote the development of courses and implementation of intelligent assistance systems. The aim of this initiative is to further develop the technology and to transfer it into social and economic benefits, which further increases the relevance of events such as the day of computer science.

The next day of computer science at the TU Braunschweig is planned for January 26, 2026, and the organizers are already looking forward to another exchange between schools and university. Martin Henkel, the department for career orientation, thanked everyone involved and showed through that he would like a return as a visitor or student.
