With makey: Lab on the digital future - Maker Faire Hannover inspires young people
Hannover. on the Maker Faire, which took place on August 17 and 18 in Hanover, a new type of experiment called makey: Lab was presented, which is designed especially for young people. The DIY-Magazin Make, in cooperation with the IoT workshop of the Birkenfeld environmental campus of the Trier University of Applied Sciences, pursues the goal of sensitizing younger generations for digital technologies and environmental issues.
The goal of make: Lab
The makey: Lab project not only intends to promote technical skills, but also value the importance of environmental awareness. "We would like to show the young people how they can use digital technologies to better perceive everyday environmental aspects," explains Daniel Bachfeld, editor-in-chief of the make-magazine.
distribution of empty boards
As part of the Maker Faire, 700 empty boards in the form of the Makey mascot were distributed to visitors free of charge. This board version is intended to stimulate the interest and creativity of the young target group. A QR code on the board leads to additional information about the use and potential of the kit.
practical applications and experiments
The heart of the makey: Lab is a microcontroller board that offers users a graphic programming environment, similar to the known calliope computer. The integrated sensors make it possible to measure different environmental data such as temperature, air humidity and air quality. This gives the young people the opportunity to carry out practical experiments that are directly connected to their everyday life, for example measuring the CO2 content in air or the analysis of chemical processes when baking bread.
mediation of technology knowledge
The Maker Faire Hannover, which has been taking place regularly since 2013, offers a platform for inspiration and creativity. The event establishes a connection between technology, craft and art and has developed into a popular event in the international maker scene. "Through the makey: Lab we offer the chance for young people without diving into the world of programming and environmental technology without previous knowledge," continued Bachfeld.
partner and ambassador of the Maker Faire
The Birkenfeld environmental campus, known as Germany's green university location, supports the project and will also be represented on the Maker Faire. This partnership underlines the project's environmental focus. The Maker Faire Hannover is under the patronage of Federal Minister of Education Bettina Stark-Watzinger and is supported by Steffen Krach, the regional president of Hanover.
FAZIT
Overall, the makey: Lab offers a promising platform to bring young people closer to the interest in digital technologies, natural sciences and environmental issues. By combining playful learning and practical applications, the project will help to raise awareness of the digital world and its influence on our daily life.
