Nationwide warning day: Bremerhaven tests comprehensive warning systems!

On Thursday, September 12, 2024, Bremerhaven becomes the setting for a spectacular nationwide warning day! At 11:00 a.m., the full warning potential is unfolded in the city - a real acoustic firework of signals and information that should put all citizens on alert!

Mayor Melf Grantz, the head of the city and responsible for the local civil protection authority, emphasizes the urgency and importance of this day: "The nationwide warning day is a decisive element of our security strategy. Here we test our warning systems and inform the citizens about the numerous warning options that are available." This captivating event not only serves security, but also to the awareness of the population!

Bremerhaven relies on a modern “warning mix”! In addition to 16 sirens, which make you listen to powerful language announcements, the church tower bells will also be heard! Mobile sirens will also be used, as well as information screens of the Bremerhaven bus, the Warn app Nina and even SMS through the Cell Broadcast service! There are also radio and TV information, digital ads from Deutsche Bahn and shining advertising boards in the busy mayor-Smidt-Straße-a true flash show of communication!

City Councilor Peter Skusa, responsible for the fire brigade of the city, knows about the importance of the warning app Nina: "This app is our secret favorite! It not only warns in large disasters, but also in local dangers such as heavy smoke development. Hence my clear appeal: get this free app to be well informed in an emergency!"

A safety net is expanded!

But that is not enough for those responsible! The warning mix is constantly improved. The doubling of the number of sirens is currently on the plan! The 16 existing stationary sirens, which have been active in Bremerhaven since 2022, are to be extended to a total of 32. Grantz notes: "The mandate for the missing sirens was awarded in December 2022, but the high demand all over Germany brakes us. However, the preparations are almost complete - the locations are selected, contracts are signed and the necessary construction measures, including lightning protection, are in progress."

The nationwide warning day is coordinated annually by the Federal Office for Population Protection and Disaster Aid (BBK). The goal? To further consolidate the cooperation between the various security authorities and optimize the technical infrastructure of the warning systems!

In addition to this major event, the important Bundeswehr exercise "Fishtown Guard 2024" takes place in Bremerhaven from September 12 to 18, 2024 - another reason to be particularly vigilant during this time!
