Flames under student bus: drivers save drivers in Rostock!
On Tuesday there was a dramatic incident in Rostock when a student bus caught fire while driving. Motorists noticed flames that blazed under the vehicle while the bus driver, who was traveling without passengers, initially noticed anything from the fire. The incident occurred on the Schmarler Damm around 9:30 a.m. when the driver drove towards the workshop with an oil warning lamp. Suddenly there was a loud bang at the intersection to the Columbus ring that alerted the bus driver. However, he saw no connection to his vehicle and continued his journey.
But the attentive drivers around him noticed the rising flames and managed to point out the driver in good time so that he could safely leave the vehicle. The fire brigade was immediately alerted and arrived at the scene of the accident with two cars a short time later to initiate the extinguishing work. Despite the quick reaction, the bus could not be prevented that the bus burned down completely, which led to total economic damage. Fortunately, there were no injuries in this incident.
Fire brigade training and safety precautions
The incident also raises questions about the safety of school buses. In the district of Rostock, student transport has a top priority, and there is a legal obligation to carry out public transport for pupils up to grade 12 and for the year of preparation. This also applies to students who are dependent on transportation due to disabilities or other special circumstances. If no promotion is offered, the expenses for the way to school must be borne by the counties or independent cities, such as Landkreis-rostock.de reported.
The statutes of the Rostock district also determine that pupils who are not taught at their local school are entitled to public school transport as long as one is set up or that the school can be reached in a reasonable time. In view of the fire, such incidents represent an additional reason to think about the security and maintenance of school transports in order to avoid similar incidents in the future.
The day before an incident had also occurred when a first aider in Kavelstorf successfully reanimated a truck driver after a heart attack, which once more underlines the importance of quick action in emergencies.
